Grassroots community football club in the inner city/west of Sydney.
Bruce Livingston and Arthur Ireland founded the Marrickville Soccer Football Club in 1945. Bruce was a student at Newington College at the time and played soccer each afternoon, at Henson Park after school. During 1945, Bruce organized some boys to play two friendly matches against the Drummoyne Soccer Football Club’s Under 14 team. They lost the first match but were victorious in the second match.
In 1946 the Club was formed along official lines with the foundation executive which comprised of, Mr Arthur Ireland as the president, Mr Bruce Livingston as secretary and Mrs J E McKechnie as treasurer. There were two teams, which were entered in the Canterbury and District Soccer Football Association that year, an Under-12 team and an Under-14 team. The two teams performed well in our first year, with the Under-12 team finishing equal second.
As foundation members of the Marrickville Soccer Football club Bruce Livingston and Arthur Ireland were to become our first life-members, Bruce Livingston in 1961 and Arthur Ireland in 1964.
The number of teams at Marrickville Football Club has steadily grown over the years, with teams that range from the Under 6’s, All Ages through to the Over 35’s. There are mixed teams in the juniors and separate women’s and girl’s teams as well. The home ground has always been in the Marrickville District; in fact it was at Steele Park at first, and it was not until 1958 that the Club finally settled on Mackey Park. The Marrickville Council has steadily improved amenities and playing fields, and in 2010 Mackey Park got a $3 million upgrade and is now one of the best football parks around. In 2007, Marrickville Soccer Football Club became Marrickville Football Club (MFC).The Marrickville Soccer Football Club recently celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2006. The club can also boast to having one of our most celebrated Socceroos in Tim Cahill as a junior for the Marrickville Red Devils. Tim often attends special occasions at the club when he is in back in Australia. In 2008, Ron Royston, our club president, celebrated 50 years of service with Marrickville Football Club. This is a fantastic achievement and everyone at the club greatly appreciates his passion and commitment in making Marrickville Football Club one of the most respected in the district. Well done Ron!
